Department of physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences College of Health Sciences, Delta State University, P.M.B, 001, abraka, Delta state, Nigeria studied the effect of aqueous extract of ripe Carica papaya seed on liver function enzymes . Results indicated a statistically significant dose - dependent decrease in the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin, which means means Carica papaya seeds has a hepatoprotective effect and could be used as an adjunct in management of liver damage/injury.  Although medical science is advanced liver diseases are still a threat to our health problems.

The absence of effective treatment in modern medicine made medical researchers to resort urgent the search for curative medicinal products based on naturalunconventional medicine - altmed - to treat liver disorders.
In this experiment, researchers in Nigeria have shown that there are significant changes in in liver enzymes when given Carica papaya.
The effect on aspartate aminotransferase (AST) recorded an initial rise in the enzyme, but there was no significant difference (P> 0.05). Because, the starting dose was increased further, it recorded a reduction in the average level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which further reduced the level of enzymes in the liver.
The effect on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) at a dose of 100 mg / kg of Carica papaya extract, saw an initial increase significantly (p <0.05) in the ALP enzyme but with a further increase in the dose of extract, enzyme levels decreased significantly.
On the level of total bilirubin, Carica papaya extract administration, resulted in an increase of total bilirubin level, with a significant initial increase (p <0.05).
The researchers found that there was a significant dose response (p <0.05) decrease in relation to the parameters of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP and bilirubin), which may be a clue to the hepato protective effects of extract of papaya Carica.

In a previous study, the researchers were reported in papaya seeds extract are present alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones and anthacyanosides. Also, previous independent studies have reported that hepato protective action of medicinal plants is mediated by their flavonoids and alkaloids components, also through the combination of antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities. Therefore, these phytochemical components may be responsible for liver protective effects.

From the findings made by researchers, papaya seeds extract is shown to have a hepato-protective effect, which could be used in the management of acute liver injury.


Such as papaya and papaya seeds are rich in an enzyme called Papain. Papain is a beneficial aid in protein digestion, but it's better to be avoided for pregnant or trying to   become pregnant.
